Walk two blocks north on Powell Street, turn left on O'Farrell Street, then turn right on Mason Street. The hostel is on the right-hand side.
By Shuttle: Lorrie's Airport Service offers a discounted rate of $14 per person for shuttle service between San Francisco International Airport and HI-San Francisco hostels. Contact the hostel for more information and reservations.

From the Greyhound station:
From the Greyhound Station at San Francisco's Temporary Transbay Terminal, exit and turn right on Folsom. Take your first right onto Beale and walk 1 block. Cross Howard, and find the MUNI bus #38 stop at the northeast corner of Howard and Beale. Take the MUNI bus #38 to Geary and Powell. Continue walking west on Geary for 1 block, then turn left on Mason. The hostel is in the first block on your left.
The nearest Amtrak train station is in Emeryville, but Amtrak offers connecting bus service to San Francisco. When you purchase your train ticket, select 'San Francisco - Westfield Shopping Center' as your final destination. From the Shopping Center bus stop, walk two blocks north on Powell Street, turn left on O'Farrell Street, then turn right on Mason Street. The hostel is on the right-hand side.
From Van Ness Avenue (US 101), drive east on Post Street. Turn right on Mason Street. The hostel is two blocks down, on the left side of the street.
Park in the loading zone in front of the hostel; front-desk staff will direct you to permanent parking. Expect to pay around $20 per day in a nearby lot.
Informations about HI-San Francisco Downtown (Union Square)
Location, location, location! HI-San Francisco Downtown is at the centre of everything: cable cars, Chinatown, Museum Row, Union Square, and plenty of world-class shopping, restaurants, theatres, and bars. With so much to do, you'll spend all your time outside the hostel -- but we keep it squeaky clean and comfy for when you get back. The hostel is fresh from a recent renovation, and our housekeeping staff make daily rounds.
Other perks to make your stay as smooth as possible include free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, free linen and towels, laundry facilities, a new, fully-equipped guest kitchen and a theatre-style TV room. We have both private rooms and 4- to 8-bed dorms, including many with private bathrooms. Our '3 Bed Private' rooms accommodate 3 guests in 1 large bed and 1 twin bunk above.
Even better, you don't need to look further than the front desk to plan your stay - we organize free and cheap daily activities like pub crawls, walking tours, museum visits, and day trips to places like Muir Woods, wine country, or Yosemite.
'Just a block from Union Square, amid five-star hotels at a tiny fraction of the price.' --Lonely Planet, USA & Canada on a Shoestring
'The cleanest and most central hostel, and, consequently, the most popular.' --Rough Guide
'A budget traveler's dream in the land of pricey downtown hotels.' --San Francisco Bay Guardian
HI-San Francisco Downtown is operated by Hostelling International, a non-profit membership-based organization. Non-members will be asked to pay a $3/night non-membership fee upon check-in.
***PLEASE NOTE: There's another hostel that is also located on Mason Street, just 2 blocks south of us. We've had several guests mistakenly check in at the wrong hostel. Please be sure you're in the right place - 312 Mason Street (between Geary and O'Farrell). Look for the Hostelling International logos outside our entrance.
Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
